The Interstate 495 (abbreviated I-495 ) is a as a ring road around the Greater Boston round-scale interstate highway in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . Until 1996, when the section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, previously designated PA Route 9 , was re-designated as Interstate 476 , making it 11 mi (17.7 km) longer than I-495 , it was a length of 120.74 mi (194.3 km) the longest relief route of its kind in the United States.
The I-495 runs from its southern access to Interstate 195 and Route 25 in Warham to Interstate 95 in northern Salisbury . The highway describes an arc with a radius of about 30 mi (48.3 km) from downtown Boston and crosses a total of eight radial highways: Interstate 93 , US Route 3 , Massachusetts Route 2 , Interstate 290 , Interstate 90 ( Massachusetts Turnpike ), Massachusetts Route 24 and Interstate 95 twice. The section from Route 24 to I-195 was previously designated as Route 25 , which now begins east of I-195 .
The I-495 is often used as external border of the Greater Boston considered. To the north, the road runs along the New Hampshire border and comes close to it in places up to 400 ft (121.9 m), while its southern end is directly north of Cape Cod . The Worcester and Central Massachusetts region begins west of I-495 . The route of the Massachusetts Route 128 is typically common with the first, 6.5 mi (10,5 km) long section of Interstate 93 , the parallel to I-495 , but closer runs the city boundary, as outer boundary of the immediate Boston Viewed suburbs .
The section of I-495 north and east of Massachusetts Route 2 to the end of the line in Salisbury is also a regionally important and heavily traveled road to and between the municipalities of the Merrimack Valley region .
Route
The 495 starts as a direct continuation of Massachusetts Route 25 to the junction with Interstate 195 in West Wareham . The road starts with two lanes in both directions, while a third lane is added from the intersection of Massachusetts Route 24 . The route runs roughly northwest through the communities of Rochester and Middleboro , where it meets US Highway 44 before crossing the Bristol County border with the Taunton River at Raynham . From there it continues in six lanes from Bridgewater .
The route runs through the parishes of Taunton , Norton and Mansfield , where it is briefly identical to Massachusetts Route 140 at one exit . The I-495 joins its parent route, I-95 , on the border of Mansfield in Bristol County and Foxborough in Norfolk County . From there the route leads through Plainville , where there is a connection to US Highway 1 , which is often used by motorists with the destinations Gillette Stadium or Wrentham . The interstate approaches within 2 mi (3.2 km) of the state line with Rhode Island before turning north and passing through the towns of Franklin and Bellingham .
From this point I-495 meanders along the border from eastern Worcester County to western Middlesex County through the parishes of Milford , Hopkinton (where there is access to the Massachusetts Turnpike ), Westborough , Southborough , Marlborough (where I-495 joins the US Highway 20 and Interstate 290 meets), Hudson , Berlin , Bolton (where the route begins to turn northeast), and Harvard .
The I-495 now runs exclusively in the area of Middlesex County and passes through the towns of Boxborough , Littleton (where it connects to Route 2 are), Westford and Chelmsford . The connections to US Highway 3 and the Lowell Connector are located on the city limits of Lowell . The route continues through Lowell to Tewksbury before entering the Essex County area at Andover , which is connected to Interstate 93 .
From there the road goes to Lawrence , where it turns north and crosses the Shawsheen River . Via North Andover the road runs over the Merrimack River back to Lawrence . At Methuen , the route turns northeast again after the junction with Massachusetts Route 213 and passes through Haverhill (where it approaches the New Hampshire border to within 150 yd ), Bradford , Merrimac and Amesbury before it joins Interstate 95 at its north end in Salisbury about 1.5 mi (2.4 km) from the state line .
