The Shawsheen River is a right tributary of the Merrimack River in the northeast of the US state Massachusetts .
In addition to the current spelling, the spellings Shawshine , Shashin , Shashine and Shashene were also used in the past . This name means "great spring". The 40 km long river flows mainly northward through the towns of Bedford , Billerica , Tewksbury and Andover and flows into the Merrimack River at Lawrence . It was of great importance in the settlement of its catchment area, as many mills were built on its banks in order to use the water power. Today there are hiking trails and parks along the river and the Shawsheen River Watershed Association is trying to conserve the river.
In June 2001, the Merrimack River Watershed Council found that the Shawsheen River did not meet legal water quality standards. As a result of increased pollution, large parts of the river have been included in the list of damaged waters of the Clean Water Act .
