The Interstate 39 (abbreviated I-39 ) is an interstate highway in the Midwest of the United States . It begins near Normal in the state of Illinois on Interstate 55 and ends at Rothschild , Wisconsin on Wisconsin State Route 29 six miles south of Wausau .
I-39 is largely a large bypass route around Chicago , which was built in the 1980s and 1990s. For large parts of Wisconsin, the interstate also serves as an important connection to the more southern cities such as Cincinnati , Louisville and Indianapolis without having to cross the greater Chicago area.

In Illinois, Interstate 39 begins on Interstate 55 north of Normal and then runs north along Illinois State Route 251 . In the Cherry Valley metropolitan area near Rockford , the road meets Interstate 90 and then leads to the Wisconsin border on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway .
Wisconsin
After two miles down the I-39 meets east of Beloit on Interstate 43 . Between Madison and Portage , Interstate 39 shares the route with Interstate 94 . After about 100 more miles, I-39 ends on US Highway 51 and Wisconsin State Route 29 near Rothschild .
