history

Wisconsin in 1718, map by Guillaume Delisle showing the historical portage.

The regional Indian tribes , and later also the European traders, already used the advantage of the lowlands between the Fox River and the Wisconsin River as a natural portage . In 1673 Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet came to what is now Portage using canoes. The French fur traders described the place as "le portage". The city owes its name to this word (description for "carry water vehicles to be able to avoid obstacles in the water section"). As a "portage" the community developed into a lively trading center. To support this development, a canal to the Fox River was built. It succeeded in establishing an important waterway between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River . The waterway became known as the Fox-Wisconsin Waterway and was an important and widely used route for fur traders during the French colonization of the American continent. Portage was later connected to the railway network. Portage has had city status since 1854 .
