Guillaume Delisle
Guillaume Delisle (born February 28, 1675 in Paris , † January 25, 1726 in Paris), also known as Guillaume de l'Isle , was a French cartographer .
Life
In 1702 he became a member of the Paris Académie des Sciences , received the title of royal geographer and was commissioned by Louis XIV to teach his great-grandson (later King Louis XV ) in geography . On behalf of Peter the Great , he provided a large map of the Caspian Sea , whose true location and shape only became known through this. Delisle was the first to initiate a scientifically comparative geography by using travelogues and the works of naturalists in his works . He published numerous maps, which differed in elegance and sharpness from the earlier maps.
His father Claude Delisle (1644-1720) was also a cartographer, historian and geographer. His brother Joseph Nicolas Delisle (1688–1768) was a well-known astronomer . His youngest brother Louis De l'Isle de la Croyère (1690–1741) was also an astronomer and participant in the Great Nordic Expedition led by Vitus Bering .
