memories

Next to the obelisk on the Propstenfeld (commemorating the Franco-German War 1870/71), the memorial column in front of the Realschule am Propstenfeld for the Schleswig-Holstein uprising , the obelisk for Field Marshal Moltke on Moltkeplatz, the memorial for the German prisoners of war (also in front of the above-mentioned secondary school), the stylized Berlin Wall in Schulstrasse (to commemorate the popular uprising in the GDR on June 17, 1953 and for many years also to the lost eastern territories ), the memorial stone "Ostland - Heimatland" in Gerberstrasse (also in memory of the former German eastern territories) as well as the corresponding signpost at the ZOB (to the cities of the lost east), the memorial stone placed in 1898 for the 50th anniversary of the uprising of Schleswig-Holstein (also Schulstrasse) and the two memorials for the fallen of the First and Second World Wars on the church cemetery in Friedensallee are particularly noteworthy ben: the memorial stone for the victims of the National Socialist regime (at the town hall / Schulstrasse) and the memorial stone at the former location of the synagogue (Flamweg) for the victims of the Holocaust and the Reichspogromnacht on November 9, 1938. In the same context, it is important for historical memory also the renovated mourning hall (incorrectly called the “Jewish chapel”) in the Jewish cemetery in Feldstrasse. The active museum group of the industrial museum created ten texts on the subjects of forced labor , persecution and resistance to National Socialism , which were put up on blue information boards in the town of Elmshorn.

The most recent far-reaching historical event in Elmshorn is remembered by photo boards at various points in the city center: the storm surge of 1962. Large parts of the city were then under water and, for the time, astronomical damage to property of many million DM was the result. Not only the photo boards give an impression of the water level, but also a metal memorial plaque that was attached to a house on Vormstegen Street.

A memorial stone was placed in the middle of this park for the meritorious Elmshorn citizen Matthias Kruse , who was significantly involved in the founding and creation of the city park. A carved inscription on a boulder (ice age moraine stone) in the Steindammpark commemorates the town twinning Elmshorn - Tarascon ( France ) . On Holstenplatz there is a memorial stone with the inscription "1844", which is supposed to commemorate the opening of the Elmshorn train station, which was one of the first in Germany. Diagonally opposite was a fountain that was demolished in 2008 and depicted the prow of the Elmshorn whaler "Flora" with a figurehead of the eponymous Roman goddess. This bronze sculpture "Flora", created by Wilhelm Petersen , is now integrated into the rear facade of the Volksbank headquarters in Königstrasse with a view of Krückau.
