The Namibian Police Force (usually only briefly Nampol or NamPol or NAMPOL ) is the police of Namibia and thus the executive authority and for public safety and order in charge in Namibia.

history

The Imperial German " Imperial Protection Force " of 1884 was the first executive power in Namibia on a state level. The first actual police force in Namibia was the “Imperial State Police for German South West Africa ” , founded on March 1, 1905 .

In 1907 the state police consisted of 400 employees and was gradually equipped with motor vehicles . However, horses and camels remained the most common means of transport for several years. The last camels were not taken out of service until after the Second World War .

The command of the "National Police" ended with the invasion of South Africa during the First World War , whereupon it was taken over by the structure of the South African "Mounted Riflemen".

In February 1916 it took over its duties as the new military police force with a staff of 1,100 employees (including 52 officers ). A training center with 16 trainers was also set up. In December 1919 and 1939 these units were integrated more closely into the South African police. from 1920 to 1990 this was known as the South West African Police (SWAPOL).

With the independence of Namibia on March 21, 1990, the police received their current name as "Namibian Police Force".
