Map Opuwo in Namibia

Opuwo (formerly Ohopoho ) is the capital of the north Namibian region of Kunene and constituency (Opuwo city) and with 7900 inhabitants the only city in the Kaokoveld in Namibia .

Opuwo is located north of the Joubert Mountains and means something like "the end" in the tribal language of the Himba, probably because the infrastructure north of the city was severely restricted.

history

Opuwo was set up by the South African government as an administrative center for the municipal area of the Himba , then used as a base by the South African military and expanded as a city by the UNTAG troops until 1990 . Opuwo also has the area's only hospital and some beautiful lodges. Opuwo is now a popular station on the way to the northern Epupa Falls ( Kunene River ). There are some small campsites and lodges there. Opuwo is also suitable as a starting point for trips to the Marienfluss Valley and the Hartmann Valley.
