Rochelle is a city in Ogle County in the north of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Rochelle had 9,424 inhabitants; until the estimate in 2009, the population increased to 9,858.

Rochelle is the birthplace of three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen .

geography

Rochelle extends over 19.4 km², which consists entirely of land. The Kyte River flows through the city and flows into the Rock River around 30 km northwest .

The nearest large towns are Rockford (40,6 km north), Chicago (130 km east), Ottawa (Illinois) (91.5 km south) that the Mississippi situated Clinton in neighboring Iowa (106 km west) and the Quad Cities (146 km southwest).

Transport and economy

On the southern edge of Rochelle, Interstate 88 runs in a west-east direction , which a few kilometers east of the city crosses Interstate 39, which runs in a north-south direction (with which US Highway 51 is congruent here). Illinois State Routes 38 and 251 meet in downtown Rochelle .

Rochelle is the junction of several railway lines Union Pacific Railroad and the BNSF Railway . The Rochelle Railroad Park museum commemorates the history of the railway . In Rochelle locomotives were manufactured by the Whitcomb Locomotive Works until 1952.

In Rochelle, the Global III Intermodal Facility has been a modern container station of the Union Pacific Railroad since 2003 .

Rochelle Municipal Airport is located south of the city .

Rochelle has enjoyed a reputation as a hub city in the past, as several important traffic routes have always crossed here. The Lincoln Highway , the first transcontinental coast-to-coast road link, ran through Rochelle, where Highway 51 crossed one of the longest north-south connections. Two important railway lines, the BNSF Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad, still cross within the city.

Even the local sports clubs are called “hubs”.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000 , the population was 9,424. These were distributed over 3,688 households in 2,415 families. The population density was 485.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 3,916 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 201.6 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 86.8 percent white , 1.1 percent African American , 0.5 percent Native American , 0.9 percent Asian, and 8.7 percent other. 1.9 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 19.2 percent of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.

27.1 percent were under 18 years of age, 10.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44, 19.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.5 percent 65 and over. The mean age was 34 years. Statistically, there were 97.0 men for every 100 women, 93.1 among those over 18 years of age.

The median income per household was 37,984  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 46,563 USD. The median income for men was $ 35,890 and that for women was $ 25,058. The per capita income was $ 18,139. Around 7.6 percent of families and 10.4 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
