Byron, also known as the Gateway to the Rock River Valley , is located on both sides of the Rock River in the Byron and Marion Township . The city lies at 42 ° 07'37 "north latitude and 89 ° 15'20" west longitude and extends over 9 km².
Neighboring towns are Rockford (15 miles northeast), Stillman Valley (7.3 miles east northeast), Oregon (17.3 miles southwest), and Leaf River (8 miles west).

Illinois State Route 2 runs through Byron and runs along the Rock River . This is crossed in the city center by Illinois State Route 72 , which also crosses the Rock River via a bridge.
A Canadian Pacific Railway runs parallel to State Route 72 and runs west from Chicago . This crosses the Rock River west of Byron over a bridge. A siding leads over a second railway bridge, which leads south from the city center to the nuclear power plant.
