Polo is a city in Ogle County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Illinois . In 2000 Polo had 2,477 inhabitants; until 2009 the population remained relatively stable. The city is named after the Italian Marco Polo .
The place owes its motto, "Gateway to the Pines", to the nearby White Pines Forest State Park . In 1856, the future US President Abraham Lincoln visited the city.

US Highway 52 and Illinois State Route 26 run congruently through Polo in a north-south direction and meet a number of secondary roads in the center.
A railway line of the BNSF Railway runs from Savanna on the Mississippi to Chicago in a west-east direction through the center of Polo.
The closest major cities are Rockford (62.6 km northeast), Chicago (186 km east), and the Quad Cities (132 km southwest).

In the official census in 2000 , the population was 2,477. These were distributed over 1,007 households in 654 families. The population density was 735.7 inhabitants per square kilometer.
