The Massachusetts Route 1A is running in a north-south direction State Route in the State of Massachusetts of the United States . It is designed as an alternative route to US Highway 1 and its course is partly identical to this, which is why Route 1A is interrupted twice and not continuously indicated. Due to the reorganization by the Big Dig in the urban area of Boston , the route is also interrupted there. The older tunnels to and from East Boston have intersections with I-93 and road links to a point north of where the undesignated Route 1A branches off from Route 1 in downtown Boston. A connection to Route 1A is possible via I-90 and the newer Ted Williams Tunnel .
Route
Part 1: Attleboro
A short 1.8 mi (2.9 km ) stretch of Route 1A in Attleboro extends from US Highway 1A on the Rhode Island border through an intersection with I-95 , then turns north and to unite with US Highway 1 . The route described is shown as Newport Avenue .
Part 2: North Attleborough to Dedham
This segment of Route 1A extends north from North Attleborough to Dedham . The route runs through the towns of Plainville , Wrentham , Norfolk , Walpole , Norwood and Westwood .
Part 3: Boston to Salisbury
This section runs from Boston to Salisbury . The route begins on US Highway 1 at the former Government Center / Logan International Airport intersection with I-93 and Massachusetts Route 3 . From there it runs north through the Callahan Tunnel (toll-free) and south through the Sumner Tunnel (toll) to become the East Boston Expressway after leaving at Logan Airport . Immediately after the airport, I-90 ends at Route 1A .
The route continues as a motorway-like road through Revere past Suffolk Downs and Wonderland Greyhound Park to Lynn . There the route is initially identical to the Lynnway for 1.5 mi (2.4 km ) and is heavily traveled. Then the route is identical to Massachusetts Route 129 for 1 mi (1.6 km ) before heading to Swampscott as Paradise Road . At Vinnin Square it continues as Loring Avenue to Salem , and then on Lafayette Street identical to Massachusetts Route 114 . At the intersection with Derby Street , Route 1A turns right and then turns left again as Hawthorne Boulevard . From there, the route continues on Winter Street and Bridge Street to Beverly .
In town, the route follows the main downtown streets and then turns north through Wenham , Hamilton and Ipswich , where it is largely identical to Massachusetts Route 133 , until it reaches Rowley . There it continues through Newbury to unite in Newburyport with US Highway 1 and over the Merrimack River to the city center of Salisbury . The route finally ends at Salisbury Beach on the New Hampshire border , from where it continues as New Hampshire Route 1A .
