The Bowker Overpass is a total of about 0.5 mi (0.8 km ) long girder bridge of steel in Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It was opened in 1965 and runs parallel to the Muddy River on Charlesgate Street via Commonwealth Avenue , Beacon Street and Interstate 90 . The bridge connects Boylston Street with Storrow Drive . The bridge was named after State Senator Philip G. Bowker , who played a key role in Boston urban planning in the 1960s.
Demolition plans
Since the structure divides the Emerald Necklace , is partly dilapidated and visually no longer corresponds to today's times, already in 2011 intensive thought was given to a demolition, particularly desired by the residents, after a hole with a size of 12 ft (3.7 m ) times 1 ft (0.3 m ) was created in the roadway that had to be covered with steel plates. In fact, however, a city-wide bridge refurbishment program funds amounting to 1.8 million were under US dollars provided for the rehabilitation of the building with planned start of work early-2013. This is necessary to ensure road safety as long as the final further course of action has not been decided.
