The Memorial Drive is the Parkway designed street in Cambridge in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The section west of Boston University Bridge is identified as Massachusetts Route 2 .

history

The Memorial Drive on the Longfellow Bridge overlooking the Boston John Hancock Tower

The street was run as Charles River Road until 1922 and was renamed in the wake of the takeover of Charles River Park by the Metropolitan District Commission . The name was in honor of the fallen soldiers of World War I selected.

background

The Memorial Drive is - like the other parkways along the Charles River Esplanade - part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (successor to the Metropolitan District Commission managed). Since the street leads through a local recreation area, the section between Western Avenue and Mount Auburn Hospital is closed to motorized vehicles on Sundays in the summer months and is then reserved for pedestrians, cyclists, inline skaters, etc. This regulation applies from the last Sunday in April to the second Sunday in November and comes into force on the days concerned from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The median makes a so-called Michigan Left necessary in some places to change the direction of travel .
