description
The park is open all year round from sunrise to sunset. From the park, the Boston skyline can be seen across Boston Harbor , and dozens of species of wild birds populate the sanctuary. The park is located on the site of the former military airfield Naval Air Station Squantum , of which only a 2,700 ft (822.96 m ) long piece of the runway remains today. The Fore River Shipyard of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation , where the company built destroyers for the Navy , was also located there until 1986 .
The DCR has developed a riverside park on the site, creating a retreat for birds and preserving traces of the flying past. The park officially opened in June 2001 and is now a popular bird-watching spot as well as a harbor viewpoint. The park can be reached by public transport using the MBTA bus no. 211 and the Red Line .
