The area Belle Isle Marsh Reservation is a 152 acres (about 615,000 sqm ) great State Park in Boston district of East Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The park is administered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston .
description
At 152 acres, the boundaries of the reserve encompass around 63% of the total of 241 acres of Belle Isle Marsh , the last remaining salt marsh within Boston . In the pre-settlement period, salt marshes were very common along the Massachusetts Bay coast . In the protected area there are a variety of plants, fish and shellfish typical of this landscape , which is extremely rare for a metropolitan region . In the park there are paths and paths close to the landscape, benches and an observation tower. Part of the Boston Harborwalk also runs through the reserve.
history
The area used to be actually an island and was named next to Belle Isle also Hog's Island and later also Breeds Island . Part of the original island is now Orient Heights .
