Tolland State Forest
The Tolland State Forest is one of the state parks in the US state of Massachusetts , more precisely in the community of Otis in Berkshire County in the southern Berkshire Mountains . The management of the almost 4000 ha park was the Department of Conservation and Recreation , since 2015 the Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs . Black bears , turkeys, elk and deer can be found in the park . With the purchase by the state, the fragmentation of the habitats is to be counteracted.
The area at Twining Lake includes just under a kilometer of banks on the Farmington River , and about 2 km on the shallow Twining Lake itself. It is considered a "Critical Natural Landscape" and is the largest, non-fragmented forest in the state of Massachusetts.
In 2011, the state acquired 843 acres on the Hampden County border . 782 acres are owned by Twining Lake Properties Inc. , which sold the area for $ 3 million . Originally, 200 lots were to be offered here for just under $ 7 million; the state estimated the site to be worth a maximum of $ 5 million.
A campsite with 90 places is located on a peninsula in the Otis Reservoir , which is the centerpiece of the park. The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife stocks the lake with trout .
