The South Cape Beach State Park is a state park in Massachusetts in the area of New England -Town (municipality) Mashpee . Together with Washburn Island , the Jehu Pond Conservation Area , the Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge , the M. Doutt Moonakis Reserve and other protected areas, it is part of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve .

geography

The park is located on the south coast of Cape Cod , across from the island of Martha's Vineyard and includes the spit that separates Waquoit Bay , which is heavily branched inland, and Vineyard Sound . It is only separated from Washburn Island by a narrow passage, which allows the numerous ponds to run off. The spit has also formed numerous small lagoon or lagoon along the coast . In the area of the park is therefore different coastal habitats, such as find sandbanks and ( "barrier beach" Engl.) Dunes , salt marshes , shrub-oaks -Gehölze (Engl. In the park there is a sandy beach with a length of 1.6 kilometers, which also has wheelchair access. There is also an extensive system of hiking trails. There are general permits for motor boating and fishing, and tours are offered in the summer.
