Dennis McAleer Kearns (* 27. September 1945 in Kingston , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player , who during his playing career 1965-1981 among other 688 games for the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League on the position of the defender has denied . Kearns celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the bronze medal at the 1978 World Cup . His son Bracken is also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Kearns spent the first years of his career in his hometown of Kingston in the province of Ontario . First he was for the Kingston Frontenacs in the junior division of the Ontario Hockey Association , then the defender was in the squad of the Kingston Aces from the Ontario Hockey Association in the senior division.

For the 1967/68 season , Kearns left his home country and moved to the Western Hockey League for the Portland Buckaroos in the US state of Oregon . There the defensive player played in the following three seasons and drew other teams' attention to himself through his overview of the structure of the game. Within the three years he collected 117 scorer points and received two nominations for the league's all-star team at the end of the season. The Chicago Black Hawks from the National Hockey League then bought the defender in August 1970, but used him exclusively in their farm team , the Dallas Black Hawks from the Central Hockey League , during the 1970/71 season . His 52 scorer points in 65 missions earned him another place in the All-Star team.

Since the Chicago Black Hawks saw themselves sufficiently occupied on the defensive at this time, they left him unprotected in the intra-league draft in the summer of 1971. Kearns was then selected by the Vancouver Canucks , where he was active for the following ten seasons until his retirement in the summer of 1981. The defender already scored 29 points in his rookie year . After less successful years between 1973 and 1975, he increased in the 1975/76 season by almost 40 points. Between 1975 and 1978 he scored 158 points in 240 missions. In total, the Canadian played 688 games in the NHL by the end of his career - all for Vancouver.

International

For his home country, Kearns took part in the World Championships in 1977 in the Austrian capital Vienna and in 1978 in the Czechoslovak capital Prague . After taking the ungrateful fourth place with the maple leaves in 1977, he won the silver medal the following year. As part of both world title fights, the defender completed ten tournament games in which he prepared a goal.
