background
For the first time since the 1951 Spanish Grand Prix , Alfa Romeo participated not only as an engine supplier, but again as an independent works team with its own vehicle in Formula 1. Bruno Giacomelli was hired to build the Alfa Romeo 177 from the Autodelta team , which carried out the works for the Italian manufacturer carried out to pilot.
Due to some problems with the new car, Mario Andretti decided to use the mature Lotus 79 again. His team-mate Carlos Reutemann rejected the new Lotus 80 in general.
Since one of the two copies of the new McLaren M28 was badly damaged in an accident during test drives leading up to the John Watson Grand Prix , Patrick Tambay had to contest the race weekend with the M26 .
training
The Ligier drivers Jacques Laffite and Patrick Depailler dominated the training again. The two up-and-coming drivers Nelson Piquet and Alan Jones qualified for the second row ahead of Mario Andretti and Gilles Villeneuve . The teammates of the latter two, Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemann, followed in row four.
One of the four drivers who could not qualify for one of the 24 starting positions was Patrick Tambay, a driver from a former world championship team.
run
While Laffite dropped to fourth place, Depailler initially took the lead from Piquet and Jones.
In the second lap, Jody Scheckter collided with Clay Regazzoni . Gilles Villeneuve was also involved in the accident. While the race was over for Regazzoni, both Ferrari drivers were able to continue. However, Villeneuve had to go to the box to have the damaged front of his car replaced.
In the fourth lap, Laffite took third place from Piquet. Meanwhile, Scheckter overtook fifth-placed Andretti and a little later also Piquet. By the 19th lap, Laffite worked his way up to the front. He was ousted from this position four rounds later by Jones. Lying in this promising position, however, the Australian dropped out on the 40th lap due to an electrical fault.
Depailler, who had taken the lead again after Jones' retirement, was eliminated on lap 46 after a driving error. Until the 54th lap, his team-mate Laffite took the top position again. From this, however, he was finally ousted in lap 54 by Scheckter.
Villeneuve was in third place until the penultimate lap, but then dropped out due to lack of fuel and was classified in seventh place due to the distance covered. Third place ultimately went to Didier Pironi . Carlos Reutemann, Riccardo Patrese and John Watson followed in fourth to sixth place.
