Reports
background
When Formula 1 started two weeks after the Monaco Grand Prix in Zolder, Mario Andretti , who was taking part in the Indianapolis 500 , which was taking place at the same time , and Roelof Wunderink , who was injured in a Formula 5000 race in Zandvoort , were absent . Since both Parnelli and Ensign Racing decided not to sign substitute drivers, both teams were absent from the Grand Prix.
Since Graham Hill had ended his active racing career and Rolf Stommelen had to recover from the serious injuries he had suffered from his accident at the Spanish Grand Prix , François Migault and Tony Brise were hired to cast the two Hill GH1s .
training
Niki Lauda qualified for pole position with a lap time of only four hundredths of a second faster than Carlos Pace, who was second. After a convincing training performance, Vittorio Brambilla reached third place on the grid ahead of Clay Regazzoni , Tom Pryce , Carlos Reutemann and Tony Brise, who also had a positive impact. The leading in the world championship Emerson Fittipaldi followed only behind in eighth place on the grid on the side of Jody Scheckter .
run
Pace got off to a better start than Lauda, which gave him the lead before the first corner. Brambilla followed before Regazzoni, Reutemann and Scheckter.
While Brise fell back after a short time due to engine problems, Scheckter passed Reutemann and Regazzoni. Brambilla impressively demonstrated the competitiveness that he had already shown in practice this weekend by overtaking both Lauda and Pace and taking the lead. A little later, Lauda also passed Pace and was therefore back in second place.
In the sixth lap, Lauda took the lead from Brambilla. Three laps later, Scheckter, who had overtaken Pace in the meantime, also passed the Italian and pushed him into third place. The resulting order at the top remained constant until lap 49, when Brambilla came to the pits to change tires and thus had to give Reutemann third place.
Fittipaldi had meanwhile been in fourth place, but was pushed into seventh place in the closing stages by Depailler, Regazzoni and Pryce and thus outside the points. He lost his world championship lead to the winner Lauda.
