Wake Railway Accident

In the railway accident of Wake ( Japanese. 山 陽線 列車 脱 線 転 覆 事故 , San'yō-sen ressha dassen tempuku jiko , German "train derailment and tipping accident on the San'yō route") derailed on June 15, 1938 a night train between the Kumayama and Wake Railway Stations in Okayama Prefecture , Japan . 25 people died.

Starting position

The train 110 of the Japanese State Railways (JNR) with 14 cars , pulled by a steam locomotive of the class C53 , was traveling from Shimonoseki to Kyoto on the double-track San'yō route . It had been extended for the trip to bring students from Hashimoto Secondary Elementary School in Wakayama Prefecture home from a school trip.

the accident

Floods eroded the embankment between Kumayama and Wake stations. This was by track guards also reported. Thereupon the management decided to interrupt the rail traffic . However, the relevant instruction did not reach the train crew in time. consequences

25 people died and 108 others were injured. 61 children from the school trip were also among the victims. The three teachers who accompanied the school children were killed.
