Reports
background
From the beginning of the European season, Arrows was the third team to have BMW engines alongside Brabham and ATS . For the time being, however, only Thierry Boutsen was equipped with the new Arrows A7 , which was equipped with the turbo unit, and Marc Surer continued to compete with the A6 , which was powered by a conventional Ford-Cosworth naturally aspirated engine.
training
During training introduced the Goodyear tires as best suited for the course of Zolder. Not least because of the occupied Ferrari pilots Michele Alboreto and Rene Arnoux the front row ahead of Keke Rosberg . Derek Warwick, the first Michelin driver, followed in fourth on the grid, ahead of Elio de Angelis , Manfred Winkelhock and Riccardo Patrese .
run
While Alboreto converted his pole position into a lead, which he defended to the finish, Warwick was able to overtake both Rosberg and Arnoux and thus take second place. Winkelhock followed before de Angelis and Patrese. However, he retired on the third lap due to damage to the ignition system, leaving sixth place to Alain Prost , who overtook de Angelis two laps later, but then retired due to a technical defect.
By the eighth lap, Nelson Piquet , who started from ninth place, worked his way up to fifth place. On the 23rd lap he passed Winkelhock and shortly thereafter benefited from the falling back of Arnoux, whereby he took third place. He lost this to Rosberg on lap 34, but from the 44th lap he dropped to sixth place due to tire problems.
Since Piquet, who completed the race without having to change tires in the meantime, also had difficulties from the 60th lap, Arnoux and Rosberg were able to overtake him again.
With five laps to go, Rosberg took third place from Arnoux, but retired on the penultimate lap due to a lack of fuel. Due to the distance he covered, he was classified fourth behind René Arnoux, but ahead of Elio de Angelis and Stefan Bellof .
When the Tyrrell team was banned from the World Championship towards the end of the season, all pilots who had reached the finish line after Stefan Bellof moved up one place. Thus Ayrton Senna subsequently received a world championship point.
