Reports
background
After less than six months, a South African Grand Prix was held again, as the 1983 race had taken place at the end of the season for once . The field of participants was unchanged compared to the Brazilian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
training
Nelson Piquet secured pole position from Keke Rosberg , Nigel Mansell and Patrick Tambay . Alain Prost shared the third row with Teo Fabi . It was followed by Elio de Angelis and Niki Lauda .
A serious accident occurred during the warm-up before the race. Piercarlo Ghinzani got off the track with his Osella FA1F . The impact on the guardrails was so severe that the car was torn in two. These hurled back onto the track, where the leaking gasoline ignited. Ghinzani suffered minor burns to his hands, but was otherwise uninjured. Since he had to forego taking part in the race, Thierry Boutsen , who was not actually qualified, was able to move up onto the grid.
run
When Prost's car did not start on the grid, the French ran into the pit lane, got into the T-car and illegally started the race too early. At the end of the lap he headed for the pit lane again because the start had been canceled due to an engine problem on Nigel Mansell's car . On the second attempt to start, Prost started the race regularly from the pit lane.
Mansell got the best start so that he could take the lead from Piquet. However, since he had to struggle with technical problems again after a few meters, he was overtaken by the entire field. Rosberg then took over the top position, but lost it to Piquet on the second lap.
In the third lap, Fabi passed Rosberg. This followed before Niki Lauda, Derek Warwick and Patrick Tambay. Ayrton Senna , who was 16th at the time , lost part of his front fairing and the wing attached to it, but this did not prevent him from continuing the race almost unimpressed.
On lap four, Lauda took third place from Rosberg. Warwick also caught up quickly on the Finn, but was unable to overtake the long start-finish straight due to his lower engine power.
Shortly after Lauda had overtaken Fabi, who had been second to date, on lap 10, he headed for the pit to have new tires fitted. Piquet did the same on lap 21, giving Lauda the lead. From fourth place, to which Piquet had dropped after his pit stop, he fought his way back up to second position within four laps, but retired on lap 29 due to a turbocharger damage.
After all the pilots at the front had made their pit stops, Niki Lauda was still in the lead. He was followed by Alain Prost, followed by Jacques Laffite , Michele Alboreto and Patrick Tambay. Laffite retired on lap 60, after which Tambay, who had previously overtaken Alboreto, took third place. Since Tambay had to retire due to a lack of fuel, similar to two weeks earlier in Brazil, his team-mate Warwick ultimately took third place behind the two McLaren drivers. Behind Riccardo Patrese and Andrea de Cesaris , Ayrton Senna scored his first World Championship point despite the defective front wing.
