background
One of the numerous innovations with which Formula 1 started the new season was the participation of the new manufacturer March , who had previously only had experience in Formula 3 and had now designed a Formula 1 car for the first time with the 701 model . Two of these vehicles were used as works cars and were driven by Chris Amon , who had been poached from Ferrari , and by Jo Siffert . In addition, numerous copies were sold to customer teams and private drivers during the season. One of the first customers was Ken Tyrrell , who had equipped his team with Matra vehicles in previous years .
Ferrari initially hired former Brabham driver Jacky Ickx as the only driver because the company was experiencing financial difficulties. Thanks to the takeover by Fiat SpA in the previous year, things picked up again, so that an increase to two or three works cars was to be expected for the further course of the season, which finally happened.
John Surtees started for his own team for the first time, but initially in a McLaren customer vehicle.
The Brabham team constructed a monocoque chassis for the first time , while this had been the standard construction for many competitors for several years. Jack Brabham and Rolf Stommelen together formed the works team, whereby the two cars were painted and glued differently and were always reported under different team names, Brabham's car under the name of his company "Motor Racing Developments" and Stommelen's car named after his main sponsor, the German Auto Motor und Sport magazine .
Lotus initially competed with the previous year's model Lotus 49 , while the new model Lotus 72 was being worked on in a hurry . In addition to Jochen Rindt , John Miles became the second works driver instead of Graham Hill , who switched to Rob Walker's private team and continued to drive Lotus vehicles there.
After the end of the cooperation with Tyrrell, Matra started this year as an independent works team with drivers Henri Pescarolo and Jean-Pierre Beltoise .
training
March impressed from the start with Jackie Stewart reaching pole position with his customer car and Chris Amon standing next to him in one of the two works cars with an identical training record. The first row, consisting of three vehicles, was completed by Jack Brabham. Jacky Ickx and Jochen Rindt followed behind and shared the second row.
run
After the start, Jackie Stewart took the lead, while Amon, Rindt and Brabham touched slightly in the first corner and fell back. Jacky Ickx, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, Jackie Oliver and Bruce McLaren initially passed the duelists. The very strong Brabham was able to catch up quickly and had already overtaken these four drivers after six laps. At the end of lap 20 he finally passed the leading Stewart and was thus in the lead. A few laps later, Denis Hulme , who had meanwhile worked his way up to third, overtook Stewart in second place. This order remained until the finish. Only the first three and fourth-placed Beltoise were within one lap in the end.
