Johanna von Lestonnac (married Jeanne de Montferrat , religious name Jeanne de St. Bernard ; * December 27, 1556 in Bordeaux , † February 2, 1640 ibid) was a French religious founder . She is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Johanna von Lestonnac was the daughter of Parliamentary Councilor Richard de Lestonnac; the family came from old French nobility. Michel de Montaigne was her uncle. Although her mother had converted to Calvinism , Joan eventually adopted the Catholic faith . In 1573 she married Gaston de Montferrand, Baron de Landiras. She had seven children with him, three of whom died in childhood. After the death of her husband, Johanna entered the reform branch of the Feuillantinnen Cistercian women in Toulouse and took the name Jeanne de St. Bernard. She could not bear the strict religious life; she fell ill and left the monastery.

With two Jesuits she founded the order “Filles de la Compagnie de Notre Dame” (Daughters of the Society of Our Lady of Bordeaux). The order, recognized by Pope Paul V in 1607 , is dedicated to the education of young women. Johanna von Lestonnac became the first superior . The order was repealed during the French Revolution and revived in the 19th century.

Beatification and Canonization

Johanna von Lestonnac was on September 23, 1900 by Pope Leo XIII. blessed - and on May 15, 1949 by Pope Pius XII. canonized .
