training

Mark Webber in second free practice

The first free practice took place under rainy conditions. After the drivers had started on intermediates, it was possible to switch to dry tires in the middle of training. Alonso was the fastest driver ahead of Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil . Heikki Kovalainen took over the Caterham from Charles Pic in this training . In the second free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in dry conditions ahead of Mark Webber and Romain Grosjean . Vettel suffered a tire damage in this training session. Giedo van der Garde had an accident in corner 15.

In the third free practice session, which took place in good weather, Vettel kept the lead. Alonso finished second ahead of Webber.

Qualifying

Fernando Alonso in the first qualifying segment on intermediate tires

It had rained before qualifying started, so the drivers started on intermediate tires. In the course of the first section the rain stopped and the track dried off a bit. Most pilots, however, stayed on intermediates. Alonso posted the fastest time on this mix. The Marussia pilots as well as van der Garde relied on slicks in the final phase and thus all qualified for the next part of qualifying. Van der Garde was the fastest on slicks and finished third overall. The Williams and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Pic and Esteban Gutiérrez were eliminated. In the second section the weather conditions improved further, so that all pilots used slicks. Raikkonen was the fastest. The Marussia pilots as well as van der Garde, Sergio Pérez , Adrian Sutil and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated. For the Marussia drivers Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi, as well as for van der Garde, it was the best qualifying position in Formula 1 up to that point.

In the final section of qualifying, all drivers except di Resta took to the track with slicks. However, since it started to rain at the beginning, all drivers switched to intermediates. Di Resta, who had started with intermediates, fell by the wayside and set a fastest lap that was initially impossible for anyone else to achieve due to increasing rain. Shortly before the end of qualifying, however, the rain stopped and the track got faster again. Except for Hamilton, Vettel and Webber, however, all drivers had already been flagged. Hamilton was the fastest of these three drivers and thus achieved pole position in front of Vettel and Webber.

run

On the Kemmel straight, Vettel (front right) passes Hamilton (front left)

At the start on a dry track, Hamilton maintained the lead over Vettel. While Webber started badly and lost some positions, Alonso made up some positions at the start. There was an overtaking maneuver at the front on the Kemmel Straight. Vettel went out of the slipstream of Hamilton, whose passage at the end of the Eau Rouge was not optimal, and pulled away in the following laps.

In the fourth round, Alonso passed Button. A lap later, Button lost another position to Webber. Alonso was in fourth place and caught up with Nico Rosberg , who was lying in front of him . In the sixth lap there was a change of position to third. There were also battles for positions in midfield. While Pérez maintained his position against Grosjean, Raikkonen, who emitted a lot of brake dust when braking, overtook Hulkenberg. Pérez had left Grosjean too little space during the duel, so he received a drive-through penalty from the stewards. In the meantime, Pic had parked his vehicle. An oil leak forced him to give up on the pits.

The first pit stop phase began on lap ten. The Mercedes drivers stayed on the softer tire compound. Hamilton was just behind Grosjean, who had not stopped yet. Alonso stayed three laps longer than Hamilton on the track. He also fell behind Grosjean and overtook Grosjean on the first two laps after his pit stop and then Hamilton, who had come a little too far out in La Source . Hamilton tried a counterattack on the Kemmel Straight, but was unsuccessful. Vettel stayed the longest of the leading group on the track. He fell back shortly behind Button, who had not yet been to the pits, but overtook him on the first lap after his stop, so that Vettel never gave up the lead in the classification. Button pitted shortly afterwards. He initially planned a one-stop strategy, but switched to a two-stop strategy nine laps before the end because his tires were wearing too much.

Sebastian Vettel led the race every lap

There were a few overtaking maneuvers in midfield during this section of the race. Raikkonen first passed di Resta and one lap later passed Pérez. On the following lap, Pérez lost more positions when he was overtaken by both Force India pilots. Di Resta in front of the Eau Rouge, Sutil behind. One lap later there was contact between Sutil and Gutiérrez in Eau Rouge, during which both retained control of their vehicle. In the meantime, Button passed Massa and Grosjean. On the 23rd lap, Grosjean was the last driver to make his first pit stop. Grosjean was on a one-stop strategy.

Shortly after the second pit stop phase began, Raikkonen braked himself in a duel with Massa in front of the bus stop . Raikkonen then pitted and gave up the race with a brake defect. Lotus confirmed after the race that a tear-off visor that got caught in the cooling channel was the reason for the brake defect. The part had been removed at the first pit stop, but the brake disc had already been irreparably damaged by this point. It was Raikkonen's first failure after his comeback in 2012. In addition, he remained without points after 27 top 10 placements in a row. Shortly after Raikkonen's retirement, there was a collision between di Resta and Maldonado at the beginning of the start-finish straight in a four-way battle between Gutiérrez, Pastor Maldonado , di Resta and Sutil. Di Resta was eliminated in the collision. Hamilton was the first of the leading trio to pit in the second pit stop phase. The first three positions remained unchanged.

While Vettel led the race confidently, there were three penalties in midfield. Chilton had ignored blue flags and was given a drive-through penalty. Gutiérrez was punished with the same penalty, who shortened the route and thereby gained an advantage. Maldonado received a 5-second stop-and-go penalty for colliding with di Resta. There were a few changes in position in the top 10. Sutil and Daniel Ricciardo passed Pérez, who dropped out of the top 10. Massa, whose KERS did not work flawlessly in the race, overtook Grosjean and finished in seventh position. It stayed dry until the end.

Vettel finally achieved his fifth win of the season with about 17 seconds ahead of Alonso and 27 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Vettel benefited from the fact that it didn't start to rain, as his vehicle was designed for dry conditions. Vettel won a Formula 1 race for the 31st time, drawing level with Nigel Mansell in the all-time list of the best . After the race, the two took fifth position together. Rosberg, Webber, Button, Massa, Grosjean, Sutil and Ricciardo completed the top 10.

In the world championship, Vettel further expanded his lead. Alonso and Hamilton passed Raikkonen. With 46 points ahead of Alonso, Vettel had the largest point advantage in his Formula 1 career to date. The first three positions with the designers remained unchanged.

Comments from the first three drivers

“I don't think we expected to be dominant here. The fact is, this surprised us all. It's a great result. When we went into the race we knew that our speed in the race might give us a little advantage over Mercedes, but we didn't know where we stand compared to the others, especially Ferrari. And Lotus also looked very quick in dry conditions.
It wasn't clear if the rain would start at the end of the race, so we kept putting the pressure on. The lead we had at that point meant we were able to control the race from then on. The last couple of laps weren't too stressful. "

- Sebastian Vettel

“Today's result shows that the outcome of qualifying has little to do with the result on Sunday. Even if I had started from pole, I would still have finished in second position, because Vettel was faster. At the start we immediately made up a couple of positions and in quick succession I passed Button, then Rosberg and Hamilton, so I found myself six seconds behind Vettel. But if you look at the gap at the end of 16 seconds, we can congratulate him and his team.
The car performed well in all conditions, initially with a full charge of gasoline on, and then lighter in the end. On top of that, the extra speed we had on the straight meant we could overtake without taking too many laps.
We know we've taken a step forward and that we've made up some of the competitiveness that we've lost in previous races. In Monza and Singapore we will see the next steps in this process. The updates we used in this race worked well, even if they were intended for this particular course, they are the result of work done 24 hours a day at home and on the track. That leaves us optimistic about the coming races, because our goal remains the same, namely to fight for the title until the end. "

- Fernando Alonso

“Today I squeezed everything I could out of the car, but we just weren't as fast as Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. I got off to a good start and, in my opinion, came out of turn one well. But Sebastian grabbed me at the exit of the Eau Rouge and there wasn't much I could do to defend myself: I changed lines once, which is allowed, but then I had to let him go.
After that it was very difficult to keep up with him and it was the same with Fernando later in the race. We worked well this weekend, but Spa and Monza are always special tracks because of the low air resistance. I think we'll be more competitive again in Singapore. Third and fourth places are still a great team result for us and we will take this positive knowledge with us to the next races. "

- Lewis Hamilton
