Dead lake

The Houghton's Pond is a dead lake fed by underground springs near the city of Milton south of Boston in Norfolk County in the state of Massachusetts in the United States (water code number US612940 ). It was formed by retreating glaciers about 10,000 years ago. The lake got its name from the family of the same name who farmed for many generations from the colonial times in the late 17th to the late 19th century in the area where the Massachusett previously hunted and fished.

The lake is located within the Blue Hills Reservation south of Great Blue Hill and is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). The lake is part of the Houghton's Pond Recreation Area of the DCR and offers a local recreation area for residents of the Greater Boston metropolitan area, especially in the summer months, at the gates of Boston . There is a visitor center, supervised bathing facilities, picnic areas and various opportunities for sporting activities. Even the fishing is allowed. The Refreshment Pavilion on the lake is listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
