Mystic River (from an Indian word meaning "large river") is a river in the US state of Massachusetts , only 11 km long , which ends in Boston Harbor , the natural harbor of Boston . It has a water catchment area of over 120 km².
The Mystic River flows parallel to and north of the Charles River in an easterly direction. It begins as an outflow of Lower Mystic Lake, the lower of the two Mystic Lakes . The tributary of the Mystic Lakes, the Aberjona River , is sometimes referred to as the "Mystic River".
dam
Extensive salt marshes lined the banks of the river until the first dam was built in 1901, which converted the salt marshes into fresh water marshes and enabled land development. The current dam was built in 1966 and named after Amelia Earhart . The dam is not open to the public. The dam has three locks to allow the passage of ships and pumps to drain fresh water into the port during high tide. There is a fish route , but it never worked. The dam operators leave the locks temporarily open in order to clear the way for fish; The local small herring species Alosa pseudoharengus deserves special mention .
History
In 1775 , British troops coming from Boston crossed the Mystic River to the Charlestown Peninsula to begin the Battle of Bunker Hill . The river has a long history of industrial use and an ongoing water quality problem.
Trivia
The river is namesake for the novel Mystic River (German track of the wolves ) by Dennis Lehane , which served as a template for the film Mystic River by Clint Eastwood .
