Elihu Thomson (born March 29, 1853 in Manchester , England , † March 13, 1937 in Swampscott , Massachusetts ) was an important British - American electrical engineer , inventor and entrepreneur .

Live and act

The invention of resistance welding around 1877 is attributed to Elihu Thomson . He played a leading role in the construction of X-ray machines , arc lamps , and AC motors , did research in the field of AC technology and applied for hundreds of patents in the course of his life .

In 1879 he founded the American Electric Company , which became the Thomson-Houston Electric Company in 1883 after Edwin J. Houston's shares were taken over. From this, the General Electric Company (GE) was formed in 1892 after a merger with the Edison General Electric Company . In addition, the company names Thomson (now Technicolor ) and Alstom are reminiscent of Elihu Thomson .

Elihu Thomson was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1888, and to the National Academy of Sciences in 1907 . He was also the first recipient of the Edison Medal in 1909 . He was also honored by other scientific societies, institutes and states for his inventions and scientific achievements.

His former home in Swampscott now serves as the town hall and is listed as Elihu Thomson House on the National Register of Historic Places .
