The Granite Railway (dt. Granite Railway ) was one of the very first railway lines in the United States . It was built to granite from the quarries of Quincy in Massachusetts to the site of the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown to transport. Operations began on October 7, 1826, and the route was about 4.8 kilometers long. Although steam locomotives were already in service in England , horses were initially used to pull the wagons, the gradient was bridged with gravity. Locomotives were also used later. In addition to delivering to the monument construction site, this train transported granite to the Boston harbor for shipping and the construction of the Minot’s Ledge lighthouse at the harbor entrance. In 1963 the last quarry in Quincy was shut down.

On October 15, 1973, the train was listed as the Quincy Granite Railway under the number 73000309 in the National Register of Historic Places . On June 19 of the same year there was a separate entry for the uphill segment shown under the number 73000310.
