Gemma Fay (born December 9, 1981 in Perth ) is a former Scottish soccer player . The goalkeeper was most recently under contract with the Icelandic club UMF Stjarnan . Before that she played eight years at Celtic Glasgow LFC in the Scottish Women's Premier League . She has played internationally for the Scottish national football team since 1998 and is their record player. With 203 internationals, she has also played the most international matches of any British football player. Until February 19, 2016 she was the sole world record goalkeeper , then her record was set by Hope Solo and later expanded to 202 games, so that Fay was only the European record goalkeeper. However, with appearances in the first two group games at the 2017 European Championship, she set the world record again and was able to become the sole record holder again in the last group game with 203 games. After that, she ended her career.

Career

Fay began her career with the St. Johnstone Girls before moving to the Aberdeen Ladies . After two more posts, she moved to Edinburgh to join the Hibernian Edinburgh LFC . After visiting Leeds in England, she returned to Edinburgh in 2007. From 2009 to 2017 she played for Celtic Glasgow LFC and then moved to Icelandic champions UMF Stjarnan .

National team

In the Scottish national football team , Fay made his debut at the age of 16 in May 1998 in a 1-1 draw in the World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic . At the start of the Cyprus Cup in 2009, she became the captain of the Scottish team. She made her 100th international match on March 12 in the game for 7th place in the Cyprus Cup against Russia. On May 9, 2012, she set Pauline Hamill's Scottish record with her 141st game, and improved it to 142 games in the 4-1 loss to Sweden on May 26, 2012, and has since played the most international matches of any British footballer . On October 24, 2012, she made her 150th game in the second playoff game of the European Championship qualification against Spain , where she was able to save a penalty in the 119th minute, but in the 120th minute, the 3-2 winner of the Spanish women had to accept, whereby Spain could qualify for the European Championship finals.

In December 2011 she was named as a candidate for Team GB , which was to represent Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics . Ultimately, however, it was not taken into account.

On June 14, she beat Bente Nordby's European goalkeeper record in a 3-1 World Cup qualifier against Sweden with her 173rd international match, and on August 3, she set Briana Scurry's world record . On August 20, 2014, she set a new goalkeeping record in the 1-1 draw against Portugal with her 176th international match.

In September 2016, she was able to qualify for the first time with the Scottish team for the finals of a major tournament when it was clear that the Scottish women would be at least one of the six best runners-up in the qualification for the 2017 European Football Championship . Ultimately, they were even the best runner-up in the group.

In preparation for the European Championship finals, she played her 200th international match in a 1-0 win against Ireland on July 7, 2017 . At the European Championship finals , she set the goalkeeper world record of the American Hope Solo in the second group game against Portugal with her 202nd international match , which she had in the meantime surpassed but has not been used since the 2016 Olympic Games . In the last group game - her last international match - she was again the world record goalkeeper with 203 games - a record that no male goalkeeper can beat.
