Saint Louis Athletica was an American women's football - franchise from St. Louis , MO . The professional team played in Women's Professional Soccer in 2009 .
Athletica was part of the Athletic Club of St. Louis, which is operated by Jeff Cooper. In addition to the women's team, this includes the AC St. Louis men's team and the St. Louis youth soccer league.
history
St. Louis Athletica was one of the founding members of the newly formed Women's Professional Soccer in February 2007 . On February 27 of that year, Saint Louis Soccer United LLC signed a letter of intent, after which the club was founded. The first edition of the league, initially planned for 2007, was postponed to 2009 due to the 2007 Women's World Cup and the 2008 Olympic Games . In November 2008 the name of the club was officially announced and the club logo was presented to the public.
In the debut season of 2009 St. Louis Athletica played with in the front of the league and finished second behind Los Angeles Sol at the end of regular time . In the subsequent play-offs, the team around players like Sara Larsson , Kia McNeill and Eniola Aluko failed in the semifinals after a 0-1 defeat at Sky Blue FC . Nevertheless, Hope Solo was named goalkeeper of the year after the end of the season.
The team started the second season with a win against FC Gold Pride . After another four games, the club stopped playing on May 27, 2010 for financial reasons. All players were released on June 1, 2010.
