Neist Point [ ni: st pɔɪnt ] is a small peninsula on the Scottish island of Skye and marks the westernmost point of the island with its lighthouse .
lighthouse
The 19 m high, round lighthouse was built by David Alan Stevenson and put into service in 1909. The system is still in use, but the technology was automated in 1990 so that staff does not have to be on site at all times. Today it is controlled by the Northern Lighthouse Board from Edinburgh .
In October 1971, the three-story tower and buildings were listed and placed on the UK 's Official Monuments List . The facility was classified in category B and therefore belongs to the group of structures with regional or more than local importance, which represent important examples for a special period, a special architectural style or a special type of building.
tourism
With the steep cliffs and the summit of Waterstein Head (296 m), the peninsula together with the lighthouse is a magnet for tourists from all over the world. In addition to the inevitable Scottish sheep, numerous seabirds and, with a little luck, seals, dolphins and Whales can be observed, some of which swim directly under the cliffs.
You can reach Neist Point from Dunvegan on the B884, a single track road towards Milovaig . Shortly before Milovaig, a small road branches off, which leads over some cattle bars directly to a small parking lot above the cliffs. From there, the peninsula is only accessible on foot. A staircase built into the rock leads down the mountain over the back of the approx. 100 m steep cliff to the other side, down to the lighthouse.
There are overnight accommodations in neighboring Glendale . There are also some B&B in the neighboring villages, as well as a hostel and some hotels in the not far away small town of Dunvegan.
