The tournaments
Olympia 1996 in Atlanta
For the first women's Olympic soccer tournament, in addition to hosts USA, only the other seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil qualified for the English women who were not eligible to start. Since Zambia lost 2: 5 and 3: 6 to South Africa in the quarter-finals of the 1995 African Cup and thus missed the World Cup, the team could not qualify for the Olympic Games.
Olympia 2000 in Sydney
Four years later, Zambia decided not to qualify for the African Championship , which served as a qualification for the 1999 World Cup, in which the seven best teams qualified for the Olympic football tournament.
Olympia 2004 in Athens
For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the continental associations were allocated starting places, which they distributed in special qualifications. Zambia did not take part in the African qualification.
2008 Olympics in Beijing
Four years later, Zambia again decided not to participate in the qualification.
Olympia 2012 in London
Participation in the tournament in London failed in the second round of the Africa qualification due to two defeats (1: 2 and 0: 3) against South Africa.
Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro
For the tournament in Rio de Janeiro , Zambia could not qualify again. In another four-round tournament , they had a bye in the first round. In the second round they met Zimbabwe . After a 2-1 home win, they lost the second leg 0-1 and were eliminated due to the away goals rule .
Olympia 2020 in Tokyo
In qualifying for Tokyo, they should face Angola in the first round . Since Angola withdrew, they reached the second round without a fight. In this they met Zimbabwe as they did four years earlier. After a 5-0 home win, the Zimbabwe team did not play for the second leg due to a lack of payments. Zambia was therefore declared the winner. In the third round, Botswana was the opponent. Zambia won the home game 1-0 and the second leg 2-0. In the fourth round they met Kenya . After a 2-2 away game, a 1-0 home win was enough to advance. They faced Cameroon in the fifth and final round . After a 2: 3 away defeat, they won the second leg 2: 1 and this time had the away goals rule on their side. The women from Zambia qualified for an intercontinental tournament for the first time, but Cameroon still has the opportunity to qualify in intercontinental playoffs against Chile .
