The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the first women's Olympic soccer tournament, in addition to hosts USA, only the other seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil qualified for the English women who were not eligible to start. Since Colombia had not participated in the South American Championship in 1995 and thus could not qualify for the 1995 World Cup, the team could not qualify for the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

In addition to the host, only the seven best teams from the 1999 World Cup were qualified for the second Olympic tournament . In 1998, Colombia took part in the 1998 South American Championship in Argentina , where it played a women's international match for the first time. After a win in their first international match against Venezuela , the team lost 1:12 against Brazil , but then won 5-1 against Chile , but a 1-2 against Peru missed the semi-finals. Thus, the team was not qualified for the World Cup and could therefore not qualify for the Olympic Games again.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the South American teams had to qualify via the 2003 South American Women's Football Championship. Colombia prevailed against Venezuela (8: 0) and Ecuador (1: 1) in the preliminary round. After a 1-0 win against Peru in the final round, however, they lost to Argentina 2: 3 and Brazil 0:12, the Colombians' biggest international defeat. They only finished third behind Brazil and Argentina and were again not qualified for the World Cup and the Olympic Games.

2008 Olympics in Beijing

For the tournament in Beijing , the 2006 South American Women's Soccer Championship was the qualifying tournament and the South American champions qualified for Beijing. Since Colombia could only win against Uruguay (1-0) in the preliminary round and draw against Ecuador . So they missed the final round and thus the qualification for the 2007 World Cup and the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2012 in London

As four years before, the South American Football Championship was again a qualifying tournament and this time the South Americans were entitled to two direct starting places. This time Colombia only lost to Brazil (1: 2) in the preliminary round, but won against Venezuela, Paraguay and Uruguay, with an 8-0 win against Uruguay, one of the two biggest victories of the Colombians. In the final round they only achieved a 1-1 draw against Chile and then lost to Brazil 5-0. By beating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in the last game, they surprisingly finished second and qualified for the 2011 World Cup and the Olympic Games for the first time .

At the start of the tournament, the team lost 2-0 to North Korea , with particular attention being drawn to the fact that the South Korean flag was accidentally shown on the video wall during the team presentation, whereupon the North Korean players left the pitch. Only after an apology from the Olympic organizers was the game able to start one hour late. They then lost 3-0 to defending champions USA, as they did at the World Cup a year earlier, and then 0-1 to France . This made them the second team after Greece to be eliminated without a goal.

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

For the tournament in Rio de Janeiro that was South American Championship of 2014 the crucial hurdle. Colombia won all games in the preliminary round, but in the final round it was only enough to beat Argentina 0-0. With a subsequent 2-1 against Ecuador and a 0-0 against the Brazilians who had already qualified for the World Cup and as host for the Olympic Games, Colombia was second in the group again and qualified for the 2015 World Cup and the Olympic Games. In addition, Colombia was the only team to not have lost a game. As in 2012, opponents in Brazil were France and the USA as well as New Zealand , against which only friendlies had previously been played. The Colombians lost their first game against France 4-0, so the French were able to return the favor for the defeat in the group game at the 2015 World Cup. They only lost 1-0 to New Zealand, but had little chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals. In the last game against the USA, the Colombians scored their first goals at the Olympic Games through Catalina Usme and against the USA as well as their first ever point win at the Olympic Games and against the USA by 2-2.

Olympia 2020 in Tokyo

For the tournament in Tokyo was South American Championship of 2018 the crucial hurdle. Colombia won three games in the preliminary round and only gave up one point against hosts Chile. They also drew in the final round against Chile, but lost against Argentina and Brazil, so that only fourth place jumped out, which was not enough to qualify for the Olympic Games.
