The article provides a detailed account of the Greek national soccer team for women at the Summer Olympics . Greece, whose women have not yet qualified for a European or World Cup, has so far taken part once as an automatically qualified host in the women's football tournament and was not able to qualify again afterwards and is penultimate in the all-time table .

The tournaments
Olympia 1996 in Atlanta
Athens , host of the first modern games in 1896 and the birthplace of the Olympic idea, had applied for the games for the 100th anniversary of the modern games and was therefore considered a favorite, but relied solely on this fact in the application and then lost surprisingly against Atlanta in the vote . This made the home of Coca-Cola the site of the first women's Olympic soccer tournament, although none of the games took place in Atlanta itself. In addition to hosts USA, only the other seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil qualified for the English women who were not eligible to start . As Greece in the World Cup qualifiers , only the last place in the group stage behind Iceland and the Netherlands had occupied, they had failed to qualify for the World Cup and thus the possibility of qualifying for the Olympics. In addition, Greece was downgraded to category B for the following European Championship qualification , from which the promotion to the A category for the next World Cup qualification did not succeed.
Olympia 2000 in Sydney
In addition to host Australia, only the other seven best teams from the 1999 World Cup qualified for the second women's Olympic tournament . Since Greece belonged to the World Cup qualification nor the B category, the team could neither qualify for the 1999 World Cup nor the Olympic Games.
Olympia 2004 in Athens
The 2004 games then went to Athens , which meant that the Greek team, which still had no athletic opportunity to qualify, automatically qualified. The number of participating teams was also increased by two, six of which played in two groups of three teams and four in one group. The latter included the Greek women, who met the eventual Olympic champions USA in their first game and lost 3-0. 2008 Olympics in Beijing
The three best European teams from the 2007 World Cup qualified for the tournament in Beijing . Greece had meanwhile moved up to the A category of the World Cup qualification, but lost all eight games in the World Cup qualification and would have been relegated to the B category, which was canceled after this qualification. Since Greece did not qualify for the World Cup, the Greek women could not qualify for the Olympic Games.
Olympia 2012 in London
The qualification for the tournament in London ran again over the World Cup 2011 where the two best European teams could qualify. Greece had won games for the first time in the World Cup qualification that did not take place in the B category. The three victories were only enough for third place behind Denmark and Scotland and thus the World Cup and the Olympics were missed.
Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro
The qualification for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro ran through the 2015 World Cup, where the three best European teams should qualify. In a group of six in the World Cup qualifying, Greece could only win the last game 4-0 against Albania , which took part in the qualification for the first time, and conceded the highest defeat of its 0:11 against Belgium , which also could not qualify as group third History. Due to the fifth place, which was only taken because of the direct comparison with Albania, the World Cup and the Olympics were again missed.
Olympia 2020 in Tokyo
