The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the first women's Olympic soccer tournament, in addition to hosts USA, only the other seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil qualified for the English women who were not eligible to start . As France in the World Cup qualifiers only second behind in the group stage Italy had occupied, they had failed to qualify for the World Cup and thus the possibility of qualifying for the Olympics.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

In addition to host Australia, only the other seven best teams from the 1999 World Cup qualified for the second women's Olympic tournament . France, which had been coached by Élisabeth Loisel since 1997 , had this time only finished third in the World Cup qualification behind Italy and now Finland too, and thus once again missed the opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

The French women had the first occasion for the World Cup finals qualify while Denmark and England turned round Knockout-in K.. At the World Cup, however, they were the only European team to be eliminated in the preliminary round and were therefore not qualified for the third Olympic women's football tournament.

2008 Olympics in Beijing

For the XXIX. Paris had also applied for the Summer Olympics, but in the second voting round the decision was made in favor of the Chinese capital. The French women had to qualify for the tournament in Beijing . The three best European teams at the 2007 World Cup were able to do this . France had missed the World Cup with two draws in World Cup qualification against England and thus again the opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games. After missing the World Cup qualification, Bruno Bini took over the team and led them first to the 2009 European Championships and then to the 2011 World Cup .

Olympia 2012 in London

Four years later, Paris lost in the vote on the venue, this time against the British capital London . The qualification for the tournament in London then succeeded in a sporting way by reaching the semi-finals at the 2011 World Cup as the second best European team. At the tournament in the United Kingdom they were then due to their performance at the World Cup, 17 wins in a row before the Olympic tournament, including the first win of the Cyprus Cup and a 2-0 win against world champions Japan six days before the first group game the secret favorites. In their first game, however, they met defending champions and tournament favorites USA , but after 14 minutes they led 2-0 through goals from Gaëtane Thiney and Marie-Laure Delie . Five minutes later, the US girls scored the next goal and equalized in the 33rd minute. In the second half, the Americans were able to turn the game around and win 4-2. In the second game, they faced North Korea , the youngest team to ever take part in an Olympic football tournament, and thanks to five different goal scorers they won 5-0, with Élodie Thomis scoring the women's 250th Olympic goal with a 2-0. For North Korea, to date, this is the greatest defeat for their women. In the last group game against Colombia , which was also there for the first time, Élodie Thomis secured a 1-0 victory with her second goal in the fifth minute and thus made it into the knockout round. In the quarter-finals, France then managed to take revenge for the defeat in the game for third place at the 2011 World Cup against Sweden , with all goals scored by defenders. The Northern Europeans took the lead through Nilla Fischer , but Laura Georges and Wendie Renard were able to turn the game around in the first half with their second tournament goals. The second half then remained goalless, so the French women were in the semi-finals, where they met world champions Japan, to whom they were defeated 2-1. So they were again only in a small final and lost this too, now 1-0 against Canada, with the goal only falling in the second minute of stoppage time. Canada was able to return the favor for the defeat in the final of the Cyprus Cup 2012 .

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

After the end of the EM quarter-finals in 2013 , which ended the national team career of record national player Sandrine Soubeyrand even after 198 international matches , Philippe Bergeroo took over the team. He managed to lead the team to the 2015 World Cup , at which the three best European teams should qualify for the tournament in Rio de Janeiro . France qualified for the Olympic Games for the second time by reaching the quarter-finals, but lost to Germany on penalties in the quarter-finals . Opponents in Brazil were in the preliminary round like in 2012 Colombia and the USA and for the first time in a major tournament New Zealand . The French started the tournament with a 4-0 win against Colombia, then lost 1-0 to the USA and reached the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win against New Zealand. Here they were defeated by the Canadians, who were the only team to have won all group games, 0-1.

Olympia 2020 in Tokyo

France were eliminated from defending champions USA in the quarter-finals of the 2019 World Cup. Since the British associations had previously agreed to send a joint team to Tokyo if England became one of the top three teams at the World Cup, which then happened and two other European teams made it to the World Cup semi-finals, France missed the qualification.
