The tournaments

Olympia 1996 in Atlanta

For the first women's Olympic soccer tournament, in addition to hosts USA, only the other seven best teams from the 1995 World Cup and Brazil qualified for the English women who were not eligible to start. Since South Africa only finished second in the unofficial African Cup of Nations in 1995 , which served as a qualification for the World Cup, and only the African champions qualified for the World Cup, the team had no opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Games there.

Olympia 2000 in Sydney

The team from Zimbabwe also did not take part in the first official African Championship in 1998 , and since only the seven best teams from the 1999 World Cup were qualified for the Olympic Games in addition to the host Australia , Zimbabwe was again unable to qualify for the Olympic Games.

Olympia 2004 in Athens

For the third Olympic women's football tournament, the continental federations were allocated starting places for the first time and distributed them in special qualifications. In Africa this was played in four rounds with two legs. After Zimbabwe played an international women's match for the first time in 2000 and thus qualified for the 2000 African Cup, the team took part in the Olympic qualification for the first time, but only had to intervene in the second round of qualification and met Angola in autumn 2003 . After a goalless draw at home, it was also 0-0 in the away game after 90 minutes. In the extension that followed, Angola made it 1-0. The team then failed in the next round to South Africa , which in turn failed in the final round to Nigeria .

2008 Olympics in Beijing

This time Zimbabwe had to qualify for the tournament in Beijing in a three-round qualification. In the first round, the team was supposed to play against Guinea , but due to political unrest in Guinea it did not come to that and Zimbabwe went one round without a fight. In this they lost against South Africa with 1: 2 and 2: 3. South Africa then failed in the third round to Ghana and Nigeria .

Olympia 2012 in London

Zimbabwe then did not take part in qualifying for the tournament in London .

Olympia 2016 in Rio de Janeiro

For the tournament in Rio de Janeiro , Zimbabwe was able to qualify for the first time. In the tournament , which again ran over four rounds , they had a bye in the first round. In the second round they lost 2-1 in Zambia , but then won the second leg 1-0, which allowed them to advance one round due to the away goals rule. In this they should compete against the Ivory Coast . However, they did not play for the first leg in Ivory Coast and so the game was rated 3-0 for the Ivorians. For their part, they did not play for the second leg in Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe advanced one round. In the last round they lost 2-1 in Cameroon , but then won the second leg 1-0, which meant they were qualified for the Olympic Games due to the away goals rule. Zimbabwe was drawn into the group with European champions Germany, Australia and Canada. The Africans started with a 1: 6 defeat against the later gold medal winner Germany, then lost against Canada with 1: 3 and against Australia again with 1: 6. They were eliminated as the bottom of the group, but had scored a goal in every game when they played for the first time.

Olympia 2020 in Tokyo

Then Zimbabwe could not qualify for the tournament in Tokyo . In the five-round tournament , they had a bye in the first round. In the second round they had to play against Zambia. After a 5-0 defeat away from home, the team did not play for the second leg due to non-payment. Zambia was declared the winner and was ultimately able to qualify for the Olympic soccer tournament for the first time.
