Martin Sjögren (born April 27, 1977 in Gimo ) is a former Swedish football player and current coach who has coached the Norwegian national women's team since 2016 .

Career

player

Sjogren grew up in Gimo, where he played football for the hometown club Gimo IF and made his debut in the 2nd division at the age of 16. After graduating from high school, he moved to Halmstad to study sports education . He moved to the USA with the athlete Erica Mårtensson to study at various universities. There he played for the team at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. After his stay in the US, he moved back to Sweden, then worked briefly in Växjö as a teacher and played for IFK Värnamo and Växjö BK in lower-class leagues.

Trainer

In 2004 he was coach of the second division newcomer Östers IF , which he led to second place in the southern season. After this placement was repeated in 2005, he became the assistant coach of Jörgen Petersson at the runner-up Malmö FF . Under the new coaching team, the club fell to fourth place in 2006 , also due to the fact that long-time players like Malin Andersson and Formiga end their careers or leave the club. After third places in the following years, Sjögren becomes head coach in 2010 and leads the club, which has been called "LdB FC Malmö" since 2009, to the championship , defends the 2011 title and wins the Swedish women's supercup for the first time with LDB . He then moved to the sixth in the league Linköpings FC , who were last champions in 2009 . In its first season, he leads the club to third place, winning the 2013/14 cup and, after two fourth places, wins the 2016 championship .

He was then traded as the successor to Pia Sundhage as the coach of the Swedish national football team . Instead, however, he succeeded Roger Finjord as coach of the Norwegian national women's team in December 2016 , who resigned after successfully qualifying for the 2017 European Championship . In the first game under his direction, the Norwegians met the Swedes, who were still trained by Pia Sundhage, on January 19, 2017 and won 2-1. This was followed at the Algarve Cup 2017 with 11th place, the worst performance of the Norwegians in tournament history and the preliminary round as bottom of the group and for the first time without a goal at the European Women's Football Championship 2017 . In the subsequent qualification for the 2019 World Cup , the Norwegians lost in the third game against the European champions Netherlands , but as they won all other games - including the last decisive home game against the Dutch women - they were still group winners and qualified for the World Cup. At the Algarve Cup 2019 , the Norwegians were able to win the title again 21 years after their last title win.

At the World Cup, the Norwegians reached the quarter-finals, where they lost 3-0 to England and were therefore unable to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games.
