The Weener lock is a boat lock on the Tidenems . It is located in Weener , in the west of East Frisia .
history
After several severe storm surges , most recently on January 28, 1901, the Weener city council petitioned for funds for the construction of a protective sluice . It was supposed to keep Ems water levels higher than two meters above sea level away from the city. The design was commissioned by the magistrate in April 1902 and completed at the end of 1902. It provided for a safety lock with a width of 10 m, an upper lock edge of NN + 4.75 m, a caulking gate on the embankment and one on the port side .
On June 15, 1905, the responsible ministry approved a grant of 100,000 marks . The struggle for additional financing continued for several years and so the building contract could only be awarded in 1907. Preparatory work began in March 1908 and the lock was ready for use in the summer of 1909. The official acceptance took place on September 18, 1909. The construction costs amounted to 229,600 marks and were 5,400 marks below the estimated construction cost.
In the dike inspection protocol of 1967 it was determined that the protective sluice no longer guarantees dike safety. The dykes had already been reinforced and raised twice in the 1930s and after the flood disaster of 1953 . As a result of these construction measures, the lock, built in 1908, was seen as the weakest link in the chain of dikes, also because of the poor state of maintenance. The original idea of closing the dike without a lock was turned away after protests. The necessary repair and renovation work on the safety lock was completed at the end of November 1967 and the flood protection for the city of Weener was initially secured.
In the 1970s and 1980s , the dyke was raised and strengthened again and again the lock gates formed the lowest point in the chain of dykes. For this reason, the safety lock was converted into a chamber lock in 1991. This made the port of Weener independent of the tides and the silt input was also reduced. The construction costs for the "adaptation of the Weener sluice to the new dike dimensions" amounted to around 8 million German marks .

The lock chamber can accommodate vehicles up to 25 meters long and 9 meters wide. It is secured on both sides with a pair of double mitred gates. The pleasure boat trip can use it from April to October at fixed times.
