Erin Cuthbert (born July 19, 1998 in Irvine ) is a Scottish soccer player who has played for the Scottish national soccer team since 2016 and who scored the Scottish women’s first final goal at the 2017 European Championship .
Career
societies
Cuthbert played for the girls' teams and the Glasgow Rangers league team from 2009 to 2014 , then moved to city rivals Glasgow City LFC , with whom she won the Scottish Championship in 2015 and 2016, and the Cup and League Cup in 2015. She scored 19 goals and was named Player of the Year. For the 2017 season she moved to the neighboring country to the south to play for the Chelsea Ladies , with whom she won the English Spring Championship in 2017 and was one of the third-best goalscorers with four goals.
Against Chelsea, she failed with Glasgow City in the 2015/16 UEFA Women's Champions League in the round of 32. Before moving to England, she failed again with Glasgow in the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League , this time against Swedish runners-up Eskilstuna United . With Chelsea, she made it to the semi-finals of the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League , but lost twice to German champions VfL Wolfsburg . She scored her first CL goal in a 2-0 win in the quarter-finals at HSC Montpellier . The championship title was defended in 2017/18. In the 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League , the semi-finals were again where the defending champions Olympique Lyon scored one more goal. Cuthbert scores four goals in seven games. In the championship, Chelsea only finished third and missed the 2019/20 UEFA Women's Champions League .
National teams
In August 2013, she took part with the U-17 national team in her home country in the first qualifying round for the 2014 U-17 European Women's Football Championship and scored the last goal in a 5-1 win against Montenegro. After another 5-1 against Northern Ireland they lost 4-0 against the Czech Republic, but reached the second round in second place. In this round, which was played in Hungary two months later , they lost their first game against the hosts 3: 4, with a 2: 1 against Norway and a 2: 0 against Finland, in which they scored the opening goal with a penalty but still the final round as group winners, as they had won the direct comparison against the Norwegian women with equal points. At the end of November / beginning of December 2013, she also took part in the early finals in England. There they could only win a point in a goalless draw against the eventual finalists Spain. Against the eventual winners Germany they lost 2: 4 at the beginning and against France in the last game with 0: 1. In October 2014, she took part with the team in Croatia in the first qualifying round for the U-17 European Women's Football Championship 2015 , which she survived with three wins, to which she contributed one goal in every game. In the second round in March 2015 in Poland they won against the hosts and Slovakia, but lost the third decisive game against France with 1: 3 and were only fourth-best group runner-up, so they missed the final.
In September 2015 she then took part with the U-19 team in the first qualifying round in Austria for the 2016 U-19 European Women's Football Championship . After a 3-2 win against Ukraine and a 4-2 win against Albania, they won the decisive game against the hosts 2-1, where they scored the winning goal. In the second round in April 2016 in Portugal , they could only win the first game against Greece 1-0. After a 1-1 draw against the hosts, they still had the chance to reach the finals by beating France, but lost 2-0 and were eliminated third in the group. In September 2016, she and the team made a new attempt in the first qualifying round in Albania for the 2017 U-19 European Women's Football Championship . After an 11-0 win against the hosts, in which they scored five goals, and an 8-0 win against Cyprus, nine Scottish players fell ill with gastrointestinal disease , so that they could not play for the last game against Serbia. UEFA then lost the game 3-0 to Serbia, but they still reached the second round as the second-best runner-up in the group. This took place in Ireland in April 2017 and the Scottish women reached the finals with three wins, which is to take place in Northern Ireland in August. Cuthbert scored the winning goal with a penalty in the two 2-1 victories against Ireland and Finland and two goals in the 5-0 win against Ukraine, so that she came up with a total of ten goals in both qualifying rounds. But she was not nominated for the finals.
She made her first appearance in the senior national team on June 7, 2016 , when she came on as a substitute for Rachel Corsie in the second half of a 1-0 win against Belarus in qualifying for the 2017 European Championship . She scored her first goal for the senior national team in her third senior international match on January 20, 2017 in a 2-2 draw against Denmark as part of a training camp in Cyprus . In March 2017 she then took part with the team in the Cyprus Cup 2017 , where she started two appearances.
She was then nominated as the youngest Scottish player for the European Championship finals , for which the Scottish women had qualified for the first time. In the 0: 6 opening defeat against England she was substituted on in the 63rd minute, but could no longer prevent the debacle. In the second game against Portugal , which also took part for the first time, she was substituted on ten minutes earlier and scored the first European championship goal in the 68th minute for the Scottish women to equalize. Four minutes later, the Portuguese were able to take the lead again and hold it until the end. Despite the two defeats they still had the chance to reach the quarter-finals with a win by two goals in the last game against Spain when England won against Portugal at the same time. The English women did them a favor and their teammate Caroline Weir was able to beat the Spanish women for the first time with the second tournament goal for the Scottish women, but that one goal was not enough. Erin was in the starting line-up of a competitive game for the first time and played over 90 minutes.
In qualifying for the 2019 World Cup , she was one of the seven Scottish women who played all eight games. With four goals she was the team's top scorer along with Jane Ross . The Scottish women qualified for the first time for the World Cup, where they met England in their first game, as in the European Championship.
On May 15, 2019 she was nominated for the World Cup . At the World Cup it was used in the three group matches. After losing 2-1 to England and Japan , the Scottish women led Argentina 3-0 after 69 minutes, scoring the third goal. But then they had to accept three goals, including the decisive third goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time by a penalty that was repeated according to video evidence. As a result, the Scottish women were eliminated after the group stage.
