António Baltasar Marcelino

António Baltasar Marcelino (born September 21, 1930 in Lousa , Portugal , † October 9, 2013 in Aveiro ) was a Portuguese clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Aveiro .

Life

António Baltasar Marcelino attended the minor seminary in Gavião and studied philosophy at the Alcains seminary. He studied theology in the seminary of Marvão. He was ordained a priest on June 9, 1955 in the Cathedral of Castelo Branco . After studying canon law in Rome, he was appointed to the new seminary in Portalegre in 1955, and from 1958 professor of canon law, moral theology, mission theology, philosophy and Catholic action. He was committed to the publicly discussed agricultural reform in Portugal; its articles in the newspapers “Reconquista” (de Castelo Branco) and “Distrito de Portalegre” are censored. During the Second Vatican Council he translated the Council documents into Portuguese. From 1972 to 1975 he was director of the National Secretariat of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference for Pastoral Care.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 15, 1975 titular bishop of Cercina and auxiliary bishop in Lisbon . He was ordained episcopal on September 21st of the same year by the Patriarch of Lisbon , António Cardinal Ribeiro ; Co- consecrators were Agostinho Joaquim Lopes de Moura CSSp , Bishop of Portalegre-Castelo Branco , and António Ferreira Gomes , Bishop of Porto . From 1975 to 1981 he was President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications. In 1980 he took part in the Synod of Bishops "Family and Media" in Rome.

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor of the Diocese of Aveiro on December 19, 1980 (without any right of succession). On September 8, 1988 he was appointed coadjutor of Manuel d'Almeida Trindade; on January 20, 1988 he succeeded Manuel d'Almeida Trindade in office as Bishop of Aveiro.

From 1981 to 1987 he was President of the Episcopal Commissions for Social Action and Caritas. From 1987 to 1993 he was President of the Episcopal Commission for the Family. In 1989 he founded the Instituto Superior de Ciências Religiosas de Aveiro - ISCRA ; In 1991 he founded the Centro Universitário Fé e Cultura em Aveiro . From 1993 to 1999 he was a member of the Permanent Council of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference and was President of the Commissions for the Apostolate of the Laity and Catholic Action. From 1999 to 2005 he was Vice President of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference CEP . As the deputy of the sick President of the CEP, José da Cruz Policarpo , he met the Holy Father several times in Rome for dialogues.

On September 21, 2006, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.

For his work in Portugal he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Portuguese Order of Merit (Ordem do Mérito) by Prime Minister António Guterres .

In 2011 he published the autobiography Pedaços de vida que geram vida .
