José da Cruz Cardinal Policarpo (born February 26, 1936 in Alvorninha , Portugal , † March 12, 2014 in Lisbon ) was Patriarch of Lisbon .

Life

José da Cruz Policarpo studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Portugal and Italy . He was a seminarian at the Pontifical Portuguese College in Rome and received his doctorate at the Pontifical Gregorian University for doctorate in theology and received in 1961 by Manuel Cardinal Gonçalves Cerejeira the sacrament of Holy Orders . His priestly work was all about training the next generation of theologians. He led the Catholic seminaries in Penafirme and Olivais and was Dean of the Theological Faculty of the Catholic University of Portugal. From 1988 to 1996 he was rector of the Catholic University of Portugal . He published numerous books and teaching articles.

On May 26, 1978 Policarpo was appointed titular bishop of Caliabria and auxiliary bishop in Lisbon. He was ordained episcopal on June 29th of the same year by the Patriarch of Lisbon, António Cardinal Ribeiro . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Coimbra , João Alves , and the Coadjutor Bishop of Beja , Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão .

Pope John Paul II named him on March 5, 1997, Coadjutor Patriarch of Lisbon. With the death of Cardinal Ribeiro on March 24, 1998, he succeeded him as Patriarch of Lisbon. He was Grand Chancellor of the Catholic University of Portugal and President of the Bishops' Conference of his country. Pope John Paul II accepted him on February 21, 2001 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sant'Antonio in Campo Marzio in the college of cardinals . He participated in the 2005 and 2013 conclaves .

Pope Francis accepted his resignation on May 18, 2013. Cardinal Policarpo died in March 2014 of aneurysm of the aorta .

He was Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy Portugal of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . In 2013 he was named an Honorary Grand Prior by the Cardinal Grand Master of the Order Edwin Frederick O'Brien .
