João Alves (Bishop)

João Alves (born December 13, 1925 in Torres Novas , Portugal , † June 28, 2013 in Coimbra ) was a Portuguese clergyman and bishop of Coimbra .

Life

João Alves was ordained a priest on June 29, 1951 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 12, 1974 titular bishop of Scala and auxiliary bishop in Coimbra. The Patriarch of Lisbon , António Ribeiro , gave him episcopal ordination on November 23 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were João António da Silva Saraiva , Bishop of Coimbra, and Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão , Coadjutor Bishop of Beja .

On September 8, 1976 Paul VI appointed him. to the Bishop of Coimbra. On March 24, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

João Alves became a member of the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes in 1984 and was President of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference (CEP) from 1993 to 1995 to 1997 to 1999. He was considered an important representative of the Roman Catholic Church in Portugal . In 1999 he became President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications.
