Albino Mamede Cleto (born March 3, 1935 in Manteigas , Guarda district , Portugal , † June 15, 2012 in Coimbra ) was Bishop of Coimbra .

Life

Albino Mamede Cleto studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Seminary of the Patriarchate of Lisbon and was ordained a priest on August 15, 1959 . He studied Romance languages at the University of Lisbon and taught languages ​​and literature at the Catholic University of Portugal . He was installed in the priestly service in the diocese of Lisbon and prefect and vice-chancellor of the seminary in Almada. He was chairman of the administrative committee of the Shrine of Christ the King in Cristo-Rei . He was a member of the Diocesan Committee for Sacred Art of the Patriarchate.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Illiberi on December 6, 1982 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Patriarchate of Lisbon . The episcopal ordination in the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos donated to him the Patriarch of Lisbon , António Cardinal Ribeiro , on January 22, 1983; Co- consecrators were João Alves , Bishop of Coimbra, and José da Cruz Policarpo , Auxiliary Bishop in Lisbon.

On October 29, 1997, John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Coimbra. After João Alves retired , he succeeded him on March 24, 2001 in the office of Bishop of Coimbra. He was secretary and speaker of the Portuguese Bishops' Conference , President of the Episcopal Commissions for Liturgy and Christian Education and coordinator of five centenary celebrations. He was also President of the Episcopal Commission on the Cultural Goods of the Church. He was involved in the beatification process for Sr. Lúcia dos Santos .

On April 28, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age. Until his death he was on the Council of the Bishops' Conference and a member of the Episcopal Commission for Liturgy and Spirituality.
