Consolea moniliformis is a species of plant in the genus Consolea from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet moniliformis means '(Latin monile collar), collar-shaped'.

description

Consolea moniliformis grows tree-shaped with a richly branched crown and reaches heights of up to 4 meters. The trunk is somewhat flattened towards its tip. It is armed with dense, piercing, spreading, yellow or gray thorns that are up to 12 centimeters long. The elongated to sickle-shaped shoot sections are knotted like a network. They are 30 inches long and 13 inches wide. The glochids are brown. There are initially three to six, later five to eight thorns , but they can sometimes be missing. They are yellowish and up to 8 millimeters long.

The yellow to orange flowers open wide and have curved bracts . They are up to 5 centimeters long and 2.5 centimeters in diameter. The elongated to egg-shaped fruits reach a length of up to 6 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Consolea moniliformis is common in Cuba , Hispaniola and Desecheo .

It was first described as Cactus moniliformis in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . Alwin Berger placed them in the genus Consolea in 1926 . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Consolea moniliformis subsp. moniliformis
  • Consolea moniliformis subsp. guantanamana areces

Synonyms are Opuntia moniliformis (L.) Haw. ex Steud. (1841) and Nopalea moniliformis (L.) K.Schum. (1898).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The future development of the populations is unknown.
