Titular diocese of Caliabria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Caliabria is a titular bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church .

history

The diocese of Caliabria existed between 621 ( terminus ante quem ) and 693 ( terminus post quem ) in the Visigothic Empire . Where exactly Caliabria once was, whether in today's Portugal or in today's Spain, is not yet clear; several theories of location compete with one another. The diocese of Caliabria belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Emerita Augusta .

When King Ferdinand II of León established the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo in 1161 (papal recognition followed in 1168) and had to overcome the resistance of the diocese of Salamanca , which was affected by the re-establishment, he declared that it was not a new diocese at all , but that he is only restoring the fallen diocese of Caliabria.
