Custóias is a former municipality in northern Portugal . In 1964, 104 people died in the Custóias railway accident .

history

Antas and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement. Fortified villages of the Castro culture existed here until the area in the 1st century BC. Became part of the Roman Empire . After the Suebi invasion in the 5th century AD, the area became part of the Visigoth Empire . Little is known about the area from the time up to the Arab conquest from 717 and the following Reconquista . Custóias is first mentioned in documents from the 10th century as Costoyas or Custodias. A monastery founded here around 1045 was given to the Hospitaller Order by Theresa of León between 1122 and 1128 . In the royal surveys in 1258, Santiago de Custóias was led as an independent municipality in the district ( Couto ) of Leça da Ordem do Hospital.

Presumably before the Miguelistenkrieg the 7,500 strong liberal army of King D. Pedro spent his first night here after his landing in Pampelido near Porto in 1832. It was surrounded by absolutist forces and some fighting took place in the area. After the victory of the Liberals, some administrative reforms followed, in which Custóias was incorporated into the Bouças district, today's Matosinhos, in 1836. The changes in the traditional agricultural community of Custóias increased thereafter, especially after the arrival of the railroad in 1875. Industrial development in Custóias, as in the entire region, has increased significantly since then. Today Custóias belongs to the metropolitan area of Porto .

The place was elevated to Vila (German:  small town ) on July 1, 2003 .

As part of the administrative reorganization in Portugal, the municipality of Custóias was merged with the municipalities of Leça do Balio and Guifões in 2013 to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Custóias, Leça do Balio e Guifões .
