Cristal is a beer from Portugal that has been brewed since 1890. It is the oldest still existing Portuguese beer brand . Cristal is also brewed in the former Portuguese colony of Angola and is one of the most popular beers there.
history
The Cristal was introduced in 1890 by the Companhia União Fabril Portuense das Fábricas de Cerveja e Bebidas Refrigerantes (CUFP), which was newly created in the same year through the merger of various breweries in Porto .
Even after the introduction of the Super Bock in 1927 and its success, the Cristal remained a popular beer of the company, which was sold in northern Portugal.
In 1977, in the course of various nationalizations after the Carnation Revolution , the CUFP was merged with three other companies to form Unicer .
In the same year 1977, two Unicer beers received international awards, Cristal and Super Bock, each with a gold medal at the Monde Selection de la Qualité in Luxembourg.
Cristal, which until then was only available in northern Portugal, has been sold throughout the country since 1982.
In 1988 Unicer was converted into a stock corporation and was completely privatized by 1990. Today it is owned by the Danish Carlsberg brewery (approx. 44%) and Portuguese companies.
Cristal is still brewed by Unicer in its brewing center in Leça do Balio near Porto, and since the mid-2010s also in the Unicer factory in Cabire ( Ícolo e Bengo district ), near the Angolan capital Luanda .
